Conference Description and Objectives

The mission of the Signature Interdisciplinary Program in Cardiovascular Research is to provide a continuous bridge between basic research and clinical practice to lesson the burden of cardiovascular disease on our society by generation of new knowledge.

As a result of participation in this CME activity, participants will be able to:
  • Learn how genomics can be used to better focus cardiac drug therapies.
  • Understand the manner in which cardiovascular risk factors differ substantially by race, and the corresponding implications such differences have for screening and clinical intervention.
  • Acquire knowledge regarding existing NCEP-ATP III guidelines for evaluation and management of dyslipidemias and also learn of results of recent pivotal trials published since the last guideline update.
  • Understand the guideline-indicated therapy for the treatment of patients hospitalized for an acute coronary syndrome.
  • Show how functional cardiac imaging in small animal models can be used to understand cardiac developmental defects and understand how these imaging techniques can be applied to other experimental studies of the heart.
  • Learn how to manage chemotherapy-induced cardiomyopathies.
  • Provide information on the level of compliance with current guidelines from an outpatient heart failure registry and demonstrate areas where there is room for improvement.
  • Recognize the benefits of lowering cholesterol and understand the supporting evidence.

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse ractitioners, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research scientists, and faculty specializing in cardiovascular disease including arthrosclerosis, coronary artery disease, hypertension and stroke.
