Why Lamaze International™ Certification?
The mission of Lamaze International™ is to promote, support, and
protect normal birth through education and advocacy. The following care practices,
adopted from the World Health Organization (WHO), are believed to protect normal
birth and are supported by research:
- Labor begins on its own.
- Freedom of movement throughout labor.
- Continuous labor support.
- No routine interventions.
- Nonsupine (e.g., upright or side-lying) positions for birth.
- No separation of mother and baby after birth.
Attending Lamaze childbirth classes will help women and their families learn more about normal birth and give
birth with confidence and joy.
Lamaze International™ has educated and certified childbirth educators
(CBE’s) in the U.S. and internationally for over 40 years. As a result, CBE’s
are recognized professionals in the perinatal health care field. Lamaze International™
certification demonstrates to consumers, professional colleagues and employers
that you have specialized knowledge, and skills as a childbirth educator, and
are prepared to offer high quality education programs to childbearing women and
their families. As a Lamaze International™ Certified Childbirth Educator you may
become a fellow in the American Academy of Childbirth Educators (FACCE) and take
your place as a leader in effecting positive change in the delivery of childbirth
education, family-centered maternity care, and parent/consumer awareness.
Lamaze International™ is an approved provider of continuing education
for registered nurses through the Virginia Nurses Association, accredited by the
Eastern Regional Accrediting Committee of the American Nurses Association and
through the California Board of Registered Nurses. The National Commission for
Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the accrediting body of the National Organization
for Competency Assurance (NOCA), has accredited the Lamaze International™ Certification
Program. It is the only internationally recognized childbirth educator program
that the NCCA accredits. The purpose of the USF College of Public Health’s program
is to teach students in the instruction of the Lamaze ™ method of childbirth and
to prepare them to sit for the examination to become certified by Lamaze International™.
