Practice Gap Summary

The American Cancer Society's most recent estimates for breast cancer in the United States are for 2009:

  • 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer
  • 40,170 deaths from breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 35. Right now there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

There are many advanced techniques and tools that aid in early breast cancer diagnosis, such as breast ultrasound. However, not all surgeons are trained to perform this procedure. There is a pressing need for increased training of these clinicians to improve patient care.

The American Society of Breast Surgeons confirms that breast ultrasound is useful and appropriate in multiple clinical situations, including but not limited to the following:

  • Identification and characterization of palpable abnormalities noted on clinical breast examination;
  • Identification and characterization of localized breast symptoms, such as breast pain, fullness, and nipple discharge;
  • Identification and characterization of nonpalpable abnormalities detected on other breast imaging modalities;
  • Guidance for invasive procedures;
  • Evaluation and assessment of the breast after surgical or medical therapy; and
  • Preoperative evaluation of breast and axilla in diagnosed breast cancer (i.e., ultrasound mapping, BIRADS 6).

Course Description

This activity is a taped course that took place live in March 2009. The course provides technical and clinical didactic sessions covering basic ultrasound principles and technology, case review, scanning techniques and annotation, intervention and interpretation, and information regarding ASBS certification. It also includes a scanning demonstration using phantoms and live models in order to recognize common abnormalities in the diagnosis of breast cancer.

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, surgeons, and nurses not experienced in the fundamental techniques of breast ultrasound, including physics of ultrasound, breast anatomy and lesion identification, scanning techniques, and intervention.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the advantages of breast ultrasound in the overall workup of the breast patient;
  • Identify which patients are the best candidates for breast ultrasound;
  • Demonstrate proper patient positioning for breast ultrasound; and
  • Improve diagnostic accuracy in imaging lesions.
