Pre-Requisite: Introduction to Social Marketing

R. Craig Lefebvre, PhD

January 4-8, 2010
CPH 2004

Course Description

Participants in this course will learn and experience how to use social marketing to design public health and social change programs. We will use a people-centered approach that relies on insight and empathy as much as on data for program development. We will explore learning and behavior change in a social context as much as in an individual one. We will work in a context that is the everyday lives of people, the competition for ‘space’ in their lives and the 4P marketing framework as a tool to address public health problems. We will adapt design thinking methodologies to complement the marketing planning process and learn to engage people to develop programs that are more effective, efficient, equitable and sustainable than existing solutions.

PRE-REQUISITE: Introduction to Social Marketing

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify 5 ideas in social theories of behavior and social change that can be applied in social marketing programs;
  • Use the social marketing framework to analyze public health problems and existing programs that address them;
  • Use the social marketing framework to develop new approaches, or add to existing programs, for specific public health issues;
  • Apply participatory methods to program design;
  • Draft a Positioning Statement that is the core of the social marketing program approach;
  • Identify 3 key elements of design thinking;
  • Identify appropriate opportunities for the use of social and mobile media in social marketing programs;
  • Use preparation to conduct a marketing audit of a relevant agency or organization; and
  • Develop an action plan for incorporating course ideas and practices into a relevant agency or organization.
