Course Description

This dinner symposium will be conducted to present 4 case study scenarios offering clinicians in attendance an opportunity to test their knowledge of HIV patient care with complications. This event will take place the evening before the start of the 17th Annual HIV Conference of the Florida/Caribbean AIDS Education and Training Center.

Objectives

As a result of participation in this CE program, participants will be able to:
HIV and Co-Morbidity
  • Examine drug interactions between commonly prescribed HIV Anti-retrovirals and medications prescribed for co-morbid conditions which can result in inadequate therapeutic concentrations
  • Review alternative medications that allow optimized therapeutic benefits, regardless of co-morbidities or co-infections
  • Recognize the importance of prioritizing care for HIV patients with co-infections and/or co-morbid conditions
Therapeutic selection for first line, second line and highly experienced patients
  • Offer patients maximum therapeutic benefits by considering the factors that influence choices in first- and second-line therapy, as well as the issues that affect success and durability of therapy
  • Achieve successful viral suppression in treatment experienced patients by considering the reasons for virologic failure when designing an optimal therapeutic strategy
  • Interpret data on novel therapeutic options to better identify patients who will benefit from new choices in HIV management
HIV and hepatitis-C Co-Infection
  • Identify populations at highest risk for HIV and hepatitis C infection
  • Determine the main barriers to care and prevent gaps in services
  • Communicate effectively with individuals in priority populations by applying an understanding of attitudes and behaviors that surround risk for contracting STDs
