Conference Description

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic recurrent inflammatory disorder of the central
nervous system. Treating individuals diagnosed with MS poses a great challenge for the
practicing neurologist since MS is often unpredictable and highly variable. While some
patients are minimally affected by the disease, others experience very rapid progression
to total disability. Understanding how DMTs work, analyzing the current head-to-head
trials on MS therapies, possessing an understanding of the disease process, and the use
of imaging technology to diagnose and monitor current therapy will allow the
physician to design an individualized treatment strategy for their MS patients. The most
important overall therapeutic outcome in the treatment of MS is to prevent or postpone
long-term disability.
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that
often impairs the sufferer’s motor skills and speech. PD belongs to a group of conditions
called movement disorders and is both chronic and progressive, meaning that symptoms
worsen over time. Particular patients’ symptoms may be quite dissimilar and progression
of the disease is also distinctly individual. The diagnosis is based on medical history and
a neurological examination. The disease can be difficult to diagnose accurately. PD is a
chronic disease that requires broad-based management including patient and family
education, support group services, general wellness maintenance, physiotherapy,
exercise, and nutrition. At present, there is no cure for PD, but medications or surgery
can provide relief from the symptoms, in order to preserve the PD patient’s quality of life.
It is important for the health care provider to understand the pathogenesis and etiology
of PD, understand the complex medical and surgical options for treating the PD patient,
and have the opportunity to design a treatment strategy including the neuropsychiatric
impact of the disorder.
This two-day workshop utilizes both a didactic and case-study approach in the iagnosis
and treatment of the patient with MS or with PD. The program will attempt to define
the key issues surrounding the management of MS and PD and make evidence-based
treatment recommendations. The participant will have the opportunity to apply the
information using an audience response system during a case-based activity. |

Objectives

Upon completion of this CME activity, participants should be able to:
- Understand how the current DMTs work in order to manage the MS patient with a
focus on preventing disability.
- Integrate a magnetic resonance imaging strategy, along with clinical and other
paraclinical diagnostic methods, in the evaluation and monitoring of the MS patient.
- Review information learned about MS therapies from recent head-to-head trials
in order to better manage your MS patients.
- Review the approach in the development of new MS therapies, based upon a better
understanding of the disease process.
- Understand current thinking on the etiology of PD.
- Differentiate medications used to treat PD and understand the considerations
involved in choosing medications for your patients.
- Identify and treat recently recognized neuropsychiatric aspects of PD.
- Review the different forms of surgical treatment available for PD.
- Evaluate candidates for deep brain stimulation (DBS), surgical outcomes and the
complications of the surgery.
