Needs Assessment/Course Description

Now in the conference’s 10th year, the need for continued education on the latest obesity treatment and prevention strategies has never been greater. This conference will update health professionals on the breakthroughs in pharmacological treatment and surgical techniques as well as behavioral modification strategies in the prevention/treatment of obesity and diabetes.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) Program Brief: Research on Obesity and Overweight, reports that though many physicians spend time encouraging exercise during the patient visit, less time was spent discussing the health of the obese individual. Nutrition counseling was usually not discussed. Proper counseling and behavior modification techniques are crucial to the success of the patient. This program will discuss the use of these techniques including motivational interviewing, social marketing, behavior modification and exercise and nutrition counseling in an effort to achieve positive behavior changes in your patients.

New surgical techniques are improving patient outcomes by making metabolic and bariatric surgery less invasive. A thorough understanding of the surgery options is necessary to properly discuss and select the best option for the patient. Recently published data reports that bariatric procedures result almost universally in significant amelioration of insulin resistance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hepatic steatosis. The latest technology, techniques, and post-operative outcomes will be important topics of this event.

Insulin resistance and diabetes continue to be a challenge to practitioners and their patients. New concepts about the cause and treatment of insulin resistance continue to arise with new research. Understanding the factors that can cause insulin resistance can greatly impact the course of treatment and may help to prevent or delay diabetes from occurring in obese patients. Many sessions of this event are devoted to these issues with hopes of improving the care provided in your practice.
