Course Description

Periop 101: A Core Curriculum is an online education course for new perioperative nurses. The curriculum consists of 25 online internet-based learning modules so students may access their online learning modules from anywhere and at any time.

Additionally, students will participate one day per week (Friday) in extensive classroom experiences including aseptic technique and specific considerations for various types of surgical procedures and specialty services in the circulating role. Periop 101 is taught in conjunction with a clinical preceptorship of approximately 80 hours.

This program will provide Registered Nurses with basic knowledge and clinical skills necessary to function independently in an entry level Perioperative Nursing position.

Objectives

Upon the completion of this program, the student will be able to:

  • Describe roles of the multidisciplinary surgical team in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative areas and the specific role of the Registered Nurse.
  • Demonstrate basic skills of scrubbing and circulating.
  • Demonstrate ability to conceptualize and control an aseptic perioperative environment.
  • Identify perioperative needs of the patient using the nursing process.
  • Perform perioperative care in a manner that will ensure patient safety according to established standards of practice.
  • Describe in detail a pathological condition requiring surgical intervention.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing practice and quality of patient care during surgical intervention.
  • Identify the ethical, moral, and legal responsibilities as an integral member of the surgical team.
  • Prioritize the perioperative nursing activities in the clinical setting.
  • Recognize opportunities for professional growth as a perioperative nurse.
 


Accreditation

Nurses: The University of South Florida is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Centerís Commission on Accreditation. This activity is for 116 contact hours.

Registration Fees: $950.00 per registrant

Registration fees will be refunded minus a cancellation fee of $100.00.

The USF Continuing Professional Development Office reserves the right to cancel the course due to unforeseen circumstances. USF will not be responsible for travel expenses incurred by the participant in case of cancellation.
