| Course Description |

This is a 2 part course with Part I focusing on preparation for the emerging and dynamic role of the Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA). Its framework will provide a foundation of knowledge and technical skills necessary for the experienced perioperative registered nurse to function in the first assistant role in the operating room environment. Anatomical considerations with selected surgical applications will be presented. An anatomy lab experience will be included. Theoretical concepts of perioperative management of patients with an integration of primary and surgical care will be emphasized. The Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Core Curriculum for the RNFA will be utilized for core content throughout the program. *This is a 3 credit undergraduate course
Part II of the course consists of 120 hours of clinical experiences in the roles and responsibilities and technical skills required of the registered nurse first assistant (RNFA). The student is responsible for obtaining the agreement of a surgeon/mentor to fulfill the clinical requirements. Clinical hours and the course agenda will be arranged with selected surgeons and specialties to fulfill the clinical obligation. *This is a 4 credit undergraduate course.
*Nurse Practitioners – A 6-hour operating room skills lab will be available for an additional fee of $250.

Registered Nurses (licensed in the state of clinical internship) with a minimum of 2 years of recent perioperative nursing experience (demonstrating competency in the scrubbing and circulating roles), CNOR, or CNOR eligible with CNOR status obtained before a certificate of program completion is awarded.

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

Demonstrate knowledge of the role of RNFA.
- Explain nursing process as the foundation for RNFA practice.
- Describe factors influencing scope of practice as determined by regulatory agencies.
- Explain liability determinations in relation to specific operating room situations.
- Demonstrate effective techniques for effective communication with other health care workers, patients, patient’s significant others.
- Demonstrate RNFA tasks and technical skills as related to tissue handling, providing exposure and using instruments, suturing, and providing hemostasis.
- Observe and participate in procedures that prepare the perioperative registered nurse in the role of the RNFA.
- Identify anatomic and physiologic considerations related to specific surgical areas of intervention.
- Synthesize the data collected by the RNFA for specific operating room situations.
- Discuss professional responsibilities of the RNFA regarding credentialing and accountability.
- Evaluate personal development related to role and responsibility of the RNFA

- An official transcript from each nursing school/ college attended.
- Copy of current nursing license.
- CPR or BCLS documentation. ACLS is preferred.

PART A: Please mail in your registration or use our website (http://www.cme.hsc.usf.edu/rnfa) to register with the USF Health Office of Continuing Professional Development (OCPD) and pay USF Health OCPD fee of $1,350.00
PART B: Once you complete PART A registration process, please send an email to Dr. Patricia Gorzka (pgorzka@health.usf.edu), notifying her that Part I of your registration is completed. In return you will receive permission and instructions on how to complete PART II of the registration with the University of South Florida.
PLEASE NOTE:
- Space is Limited – Advance registration is required.
- USF Undergraduate tuition and fees for 7 credits must be paid within 2 weeks after beginning the course.
- USF Continuing Professional Development (OCPD) fee of $1,350.00 must be paid in full prior to the student beginning the course. The OCPD fee includes USF College of Nursing CE registration, Certificate of Completion of the RN First Assistant Program and required record maintenance.
- Full refunds will be made only if written notice of cancellation is postmarked on or prior to 2 weeks before the beginning of the course.
- Proof of residence is required for in-state residents.
