Courses
STD Part Time Intensive (24 hours)

This 3-day clinical course provides both didactic and experiential activities. Health care professionals who work with STD patients full- or part-time are encouraged to attend. The course includes information about priority and prevalent STDs and offers clinical and laboratory experience.

STD Intensive (40 hours)

Health care practitioners (nurses, physicians, physician assistants, or nurse practitioners/midwives) who are new to the area of STD treatment or who want a longer, more in-depth course are encouraged to attend. The 5-day course includes information about a wide range of STDs (including HIV infection) and offers clinical and laboratory experience.

STD/HIV Women's Health Course (40 hours)

Health care practitioners who primarily manage the social health of women or have new interests in this area are encouraged to attend. The 5-day course includes information about a wide range of STDs (including HIV infection) with special emphasis on their impact on women and offers clinical and laboratory experience.

HIV Intensive and Part-Time Intensive Courses (24 or 40 hours)

These clinical practicum courses are problem-oriented clinical training courses designed for physicians, physician assistants, advanced registered nurse practitioners and registered nurses who work in HIV patient care clinics or in practices where a major portion of their time is spent managing patients with HIV. The courses are 3 or 5 days long. The content of the courses include: overview of HIV/AIDS, AIDS diagnosis and management, clinician-patient interaction, clinic record, patient history and physical examination, laboratory methods, epidemiology, therapeutics, and an overview of disease intervention outreach activities.

    3-Day HIV Part Time Intensive
STD Clinician Update (8 or 16 hours)

STD Clinician Update Courses are seminars for practicing clinicians. The seminar may include clinical problem solving, formal lectures and consultation time. These seminars will focus on a narrower range of STDs or specific issues in STD diagnosis and management. Update courses can be 1 or 2 days in length and may be in combination with other courses. Learning and performance objectives are the same as for similar topics presented in the Part-Time Intensive courses.

Congenital Syphilis Course (4 hours)

These half-day workshops are directed at providers to enhance their understanding of and compliance with state laws, administrative rules and policies regarding the prevention of syphilis and congenital syphilis. Syphilis, congenital syphilis, and the utilization of syphilis serology with case scenarios are presented.

STD Basic Laboratory Skills Course (8-16 hours)

The laboratory course provides experience with procedures for performing specimen preparation and stat laboratory tests used to aid in the diagnosis of STDs, including bright and dark field microscopy, specimen preparation for Gram stain, gonorrhea culture, wet mount, KOH prep, rapid plasma reagin (RPR) card test, and DNA probe testing.

Objectives
These courses provide information that will enable the participants to:
  • Discuss the epidemiology, clinical manifestations and treatment of STDs and HIV;
  • Discuss the complications and connection between STD and HIV Infections; and
  • Enhance their ability to obtain a good history and physical examination of patients with STDs.
 


Accreditation

The Southeast Region STD/HIV PTC, in cooperation with the CDC and the Florida DOH Bureau of STD Prevention and Control, presents these courses. All courses are approved for continuing medical education (CME) credits and for nursing contact hours.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essentials Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of The University of South Florida College of Medicine and The Hillsborough County Health Department. The University of South Florida, College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing professional education.

The University of South Florida, College of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 40 AMA PRA in Category 1 credits. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit they actually spent in the educational activity.
