Course Description

This course is designed to identify and address relevant medical issues targeting the soccer athlete.  This course will encompass presentations on the latest technological advances and clinical management of sports related injuries. The course format will consist of lectures, case discussions, and debates.  A distinguished faculty will present their experience, techniques and pearls of wisdom regarding current treatments and procedures available. Ample question and answer sessions will be provided.




Target Audience

This educational activity has been designed for orthopedic surgeons, physicians, nurses, certified athletic trainers, physical therapists and other professionals who care for soccer athletes in the sports medicine setting.




Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:

  • Identify and evaluate recent research in the field of orthopedic and primary care sports medicine.
  • Describe, evaluate and implement diagnostic, surgical, non-surgical and other therapies specific to soccer sports medicine.
  • Identify relevant problems that occur in the soccer population.
  • Identify, discuss and apply strategies to improve outcomes in the soccer athlete.
  • Evaluate and treat hip and groin injuries.
  • Describe and implement injury prevention strategies.
  • Recognize the role of injections for athletes.
  • Assess the role of plasma rich proteins in athletic injuries.



Accreditation

Physicians:This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the USF Health and Major League Soccer (MLS) Medical Committee. USF Health is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

USF Health designates this educational activity for a maximum of 5.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses: The University of South Florida College of Nursing is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This activity is for 5.0 contact hours.

Physical Therapy: The University of South Florida College of Medicine is an approved provider of Continuing Education for Physical Therapists pursuant to the Board of Physical Therapy chapter 64b17-9. GROUND TRANSPORTATION
From Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport: Take U.S. Highway 1 North for 2 miles to 17th Street Causeway. Turn right on 17th Street Causeway, which becomes A1A.  Continue to the hotel located on the left side (approximately 3 miles).

From North:
Take Interstate 95 South to Sunrise Boulevard. Exit Sunrise Blvd and head east for approximately 4.5 miles to A1A (at the ocean). Turn right on A1A and continue for 1 mile.  The hotel will be on the right side.

From West: Take Route 595 East to U.S. Highway 1 North / Federal Highway (Exit 12C). Proceed north 1.5 miles to S.E. 17th Street (A1A North). Turn right on S.E. 17th Street and continue 3.5 miles.  The hotel is on the left side.

AIR TRANSPORTATION
Out-of-town attendees are encouraged to fly into Ft. Lauderdale International Airport (FLL), which is six miles from the host hotel. Miami (MIA) and Palm Beach (PBI) International Airports are other options. To make flight arrangements, guests are encouraged to call New Haven Travel at 800-243-1806 and ask for the “Soccer Department.” Specify that you are calling in regards to the “2010 SIMS” in Ft. Lauderdale to ensure you get a travel agent familiar with the event and your needs.
