Course Description
This course will incorporate didactic presentations and hands-on-lab training that will enable the participant to develop an understanding of the anatomy and function of the female lower urinary tract. The participants will be taught the proper techniques to effectively performcystoscopic and urodynamic evaluations. The UroMentor virtual reality computer simulator will enable participants to develop the skills necessary to safely performa cystoscopy examination. Participants will also learn the skills necessary to performa cystoscopy with hydrodistension and office cystoscopy procedures. Participants will develop an understanding of the urodynamic evaluation and how to interpret the findings tomaximize patient care.
Needs Assessment
Cystoscopy and urodynamics is a valuable tool for all Gynecologists performing surgical procedures. As Gynecologists continue to performmore advanced surgical procedures, the cystoscopic examinationwill become an increasingly important tool. Cystoscopywith hydrodistension is also a valuable procedure for Gynecologistswho evaluate and surgically treat pelvic pain. Cystoscopy is becoming an essential procedure for the Gynecologist to understand and efficiently perform. Urodynamics is a valuable tool for the Gynecologist evaluating and treatingwomen with urinary complaints.
Objectives
At the end of this activity the participant
will be able to:
- Discuss the rationale for performing
cystoscopy and urodynamics in the
Gynecologic patient.
- Describe the anatomy pertinent to
the female urinary tract.
- Describe normal and abnormal
findings during cystoscopic examination.
- Explain how to perform a cystoscopy
with hydrodistension.
- Develop the necessary skills to perform
and interpret urodynamics.

| Course Description |
New therapies for the consequences of pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence arise yearly, since outcomes remain variable. Approaches to the equally enigmatic, and often associated problem of chronic pelvic pain syndromes and pelvic floor dysfunction, are also changing rapidly based on new understanding of centrally mediated conditions and myofascial/levator ani pain. The establishment of reproducible anatomic and functional parameters provides the basis for therapies, as well as analysis of their utility. Our goal is to meld interdisciplinary medicine and technology for effective, efficient solutions to the problem of pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence and pelvic pain syndromes. A multidisciplinary group consisting of Urogynecologists, Urologists, Colorectal Surgeons, Radiologists, Gynecologic ultrasound and pain experts will share current and emerging strategies for analysis and treatment of these complex disorders. |
