Course Description

This course is designed to provide nurses and frontline care providers insight into prevention, early identification and appropriate interventions for the patient at risk for pressure ulcers. In the ever changing environment of reimbursement and regulations, nurses need to take control and provide patients with the optimal care despite challenges they face.

Target Audience

This program is intended for front line care providers and practitioner (nurses, CNA, ARNPs) who provide patient care in nursing homes, hospitals and home health.

Educational Gap

Health care facilities both acute and long-term are facing an increasing number of mandates and requirements from regulatory agencies for patients with pressure ulcers. Today inpatients are more acutely ill with more complex histories, leaving them at risk for developing a pressure ulcer. Complications for the patient include prolonged hospital stays as well as increased risk for further complications of existing conditions, up to and including a sequella of death. Changes in reimbursement will also impact a facility's financial stability. Because of the increasing demands and the need to provide optimal patient care with a limited number of resources, it is important that the bedside nurse and care provider understand the complex world of wound identification as well as clinical conditions that can increase the patient risk of developing a pressure ulcer. From prevention to early identification and documentation the individual at the bedside is the one individual who can make a difference. This course will prepare the nurse and bedside provider with the knowledge to be an effective patient advocate.

Objectives

  • Review the structures of the skin and the role they play in wound development
  • Identify patient conditions that place patients at risk for pressure sores
  • Discuss the different types of wounds seen in the clinical setting and the accepted management of these wounds
  • Demonstrate the correct technique for obtaining a wound culture
  • Discuss optimal pressure wound prevention techniques
  • Discuss wound management strategies for the different classifications of wounds
  • Review outcome management strategies to optimize patient care based on established practice standards
